Here is the ranking of the nine places that I stayed in Costa Rica.
9. Cocoon Hotel
I had a lot of thoughts and feelings about my stay at the Cocoon Hotel, you can read a full post here.
Address/Location: Av. 9, San Jose
Rooms: From $48 USD per night.
Pros: I survived.
Cons: This is literally one of the worst places I have ever stayed.
8. Hostel Urbano
I was here for a couple of nights, I spent most of it in my room as I found the dynamic a little strange and frustrating at times. Full post coming soon.
Address/Location: San Pedro
Rooms: From $11 USD per night.
Pros: Nice garden area, clean kitchen, close to some shops. I was able to stay after I checked out.
Cons: Very noisy, room was off the living room which was sometimes awkward, bathrooms not very clean. Dirty fingernails left in my room when I arrived. Lots of drunk homeless people in the park across the street. Breakfast was pancakes (with only syrup), pineapple and strawberries – which was fairly underwhelming.
7. Hotel San Bada
I stayed here as part of the tour I did with Caravan. I might have enjoyed it more if I utilized it for it’s handy proximity to the national park which it neighbours – but unfortunately I didn’t. My room was a little dirty and not very comfortable. They did have a sweet rooftop bar and pool area though.
Address/Location: Next to Manuel Antonio National Park Entrance
Rooms: From $162 USD per night.
Pros: Nice rooftop bar/pool area, close to national park.
Cons: Food was average, lots of bugs, room not very clean & poor internet.
6. Hotel Villa Los Candiles
I wrote a full post on my stay which you can read here.
Address/Location: Santa Ana
Rooms: From $89 USD per night.
Pros: Clean pool and room, spacious bathroom, nice grounds.
Cons: Location, none of the facilities seemed to be in use, not walking distance to anything.
5.Quality Inn San Jose
I only stayed here for one night on the last night of my Caravan tour.
Address/Location: Autopista Prospero Fernandez Costado Este Forum, San José 1000
Rooms: From $94 USD per night.
Pros: Clean room, great food, great location.
Cons: Very basic, room was a bit noisy given it was right next to the lobby.
4. Lomas Del Volcan
I also stayed here as part of my Caravan tour, for two nights.
Address/Location: 4 Km NW of Fortuna, 00000
Rooms: From $155 USD per night.
Pros: Great grounds/view, nice pool area, cute cabins.
Cons: Very dark rooms, seemed to be far away from other things, ants.
3. Apartotel La Sabana
I stayed here after my incident at Cocoon, so i’m not sure if it really was amazing or I just so happy to be elsewhere.
Address/Location: 150 metros norte de Restaurante Rostipollos, San José
Rooms: From $94 USD per night.
Pros: Comfortable room, great breakfast, customer service, pool area, close to shops.
Cons: Power went out for hours (not deducting points for this though).
2. Real Intercontinental San Jose
The first place we stayed on the Caravan tour, and I was very, very impressed.
Address/Location: San José 1856-1000
Rooms: From $187 USD per night.
Pros: The room was beautiful and clean, close to an incredible mall and the customer service was excellent.
Cons: Limited options in the dinner buffet.
1. JW Marriott Guanacaste
Address/Location: Helipuerto Hacienda Pinilla
Rooms: From $369 USD per night.
Pros: Incredible pool area, amazing large room, huge buffet, great customer service, on the beach.
Cons: Location – it’s not really close to much else.
